Vigo at Christmas: 13 Unforgettable Experiences

It’s finally the most festive time of the year—no, it’s not summer; it’s Christmas time in Vigo! Nowhere quite brings the Christmas cheer like visiting Vigo during the holiday season.

Madrid, Barcelona, and even Málaga often steal the spotlight for their Christmas festivities, but nobody does it quite like Vigo. With a magical winter wonderland atmosphere, including the tallest Christmas tree in the world and an enchanting ceremony to switch on the lights, Vigo is the place to be for Christmas.

Here’s everything you need to know to celebrate Vigo at Christmas the right way.

Vigo Christmas lights

If you know Vigo, you know its beaches are incredible—but during Christmas, the city transforms into a holiday spectacle. From mid-November to early January, Vigo becomes a winter wonderland filled with twinkling lights, festive music, and bustling streets.

Every year, the Christmas lights in Vigo get a makeover with new installations and surprises. However, a few iconic stops are always worth visiting:

• The tallest Christmas tree in the world (located at Puerta del Sol)
• The giant ornament (on Rúa Urzaiz, in front of Santander Bank)
• Santa’s house (on García Barbón Street)
• The drunken reindeer (also on García Barbón Street)

For the best experience, start at Rúa Alfonso XII and walk toward Puerta del Sol, taking in the iconic ornament. From there, turn left, then right onto García Barbón, where you’ll find Santa’s house and the reindeer.

Pro-Tip:

• If you have a little one, don’t forget to drop off a letter to Santa at Santa’s house.

The Christmas Market

After taking a look at the lights, head to Plaza de Compostela for the Christmas market. Here, you can browse artisanal gifts, sample traditional Galician delicacies, and soak in the festive atmosphere. One of my favorite things to do is buy mulled wine at the market and sip it while walking around looking at the different stalls. 

Feeling adventurous? Take a ride on the Ferris wheel (or noria) for breathtaking views. Visit at sunset for a magical perspective of Vigo’s Christmas lights.

If you’re traveling with kids, the market also features carnival rides and games to keep little ones entertained.

Christmas plays and ballets

Nothing says Christmas like a classic holiday performance. Keep an eye out for shows like The Nutcracker and other festive productions hosted at local theaters.

Take a look at Mar de Vigo and Teatro Afundación for upcoming performances. 

All aboard the Christmas Train

If you’ve dreamed of riding aboard a train and taking in the Christmas lights of Vigo, then your dreams are about to come true. A charming way to enjoy Vigo’s Christmas decorations is by hopping on one of the miniature trains.

You can find them at Plaza de Compostela or Plaza Independencia. Each train takes a different route, so choose based on what you’d like to see—or try both.

Ice skating at Samil

For a fun winter activity, head to the ice skating rink at Samil beach. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or just looking for laughs, this is a great way to embrace the holiday spirit.

Skate rentals are affordable, making it an easy and enjoyable activity for everyone.

Artisanal Christmas Markets

Throughout Vigo, you’ll also find smaller artisanal Christmas markets, offering everything from handcrafted gifts to gourmet treats. Be sure to explore these unique markets for one-of-a-kind souvenirs.

One of my favorites is the Calvary Christmas Market which takes place inside the fish market in Calvario (Mercado Calvario). It happens every year on a Sunday. Over 50 local artists sell their merchandise, food and drinks and even DJ sets and bands throughout the day.

Visit 20th Century Rock

Once you’ve taken a look at the Christmas market and you’ve seen the lights, you should step inside 20th Century Rock.

While its a bar, don’t let that turn you off from visiting. Every Christmas they deck out the exterior and interior with must-see Christmas decorations. Stop by for a pint of Guinness and take in the spectacle.

Christmas tour bus

For a relaxing way to see the city’s lights, hop on the Christmas tour bus (or Nadal bus). It’s a family-friendly option that takes you on a scenic journey through Vigo’s most beautifully decorated streets.

And the best part? You won’t have to fight the crowds in Vigo at Christmas. 

Navidad Boat tour

Imagine a winter wonderland at sea—aboard Mar de Ons’ Navidad Boat, this dream comes to life. The boat is adorned with lights, trees, and festive decorations, and Santa Claus himself makes an appearance.

Tickets include a tour of Vigo’s estuary (ría), where you’ll enjoy stunning views of the illuminated coastline. And don’t miss the chance to savor churros con chocolate onboard.

Harry Potter exhibition

If you’re a Potterhead, you can’t miss the Harry Potter exhibit at Vialia Mall. Running from late November to mid-January, this immersive experience features over 1,000 square meters of magical replicas, merchandise, and photo opportunities.

Tickets sell fast, so book in advance. 

Visit the Nativity Scene

At Casa de las Artes (Policarpo Sanz, 15), you’ll find an exquisite nativity scene exhibit, O Belén Napolitano. With nearly 200 intricately crafted figures, this display is a tribute to Spain’s nativity traditions.

Running from early November to early January, it’s a must-see for those who love history and art.

Papanoelada

Every December, hundreds of motorcyclists dressed as Santa Claus parade through the streets of Vigo in the annual Papanoelada. The sight of Santas on bikes spreading holiday cheer is unforgettable! Feeling bold? Dress up as Santa and join the ride—it’s the ultimate Christmas adventure.

Whether it’s strolling under the lights, savoring hot wine at the Christmas market, or skating by the sea, Christmas in Vigo offers something for everyone. This city truly comes alive during the holidays, making it an unforgettable destination.

Party one last time before New Year’s

In Spain, Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), is the time for gathering with your family to eat dinner and open presents. But, before that it’s all about grabbing drinks with friends and partying before heading to your parents for dinner at 8pm or 10pm.

If you find yourself in Vigo on Christmas Eve, you’ll want to grab your best Santa hat or reindeer antlers and head to the city center. Around 12pm you’ll start to see people grabbing drinks with their friends and listening to DJ sets that are scattered throughout the city center. From about 12pm-8pm you can party like a Spaniard before heading off for dinner.

How many days do I need to enjoy Vigo at Christmas? 

While you can quickly see the highlights in one day. I recommend staying a minimum of two days so that you can take your time seeing the lights, riding the holiday rides, and eating your way through Vigo. 

There are also free outdoor concerts (weather permitting) that you’ll want to check out to get the full Christmas experience in Vigo. Vigo’s slogan is “Vigo: Where Christmas lives” for a reason, so take your time and stay awhile! 

Where to stay

If you have the time, I definitely recommend spending a couple days visiting Vigo at Christmas, because you won’t feel so rushed and you’ll be able to take in the lights and Christmas at a leisurely pace.

Where can I park?

Whatever you do, don’t park in the center of Vigo. At first it might seem like the most convenient, but believe me it isn’t. From going in circles for hours, full parking lots, to not being able to get out of your parking garage because of Christmas traffic–I’ve seen it all. 

Try this instead: 

• Centro Comercial Plaza Elíptica: It’s about a 15 minute walk to the center and you can enjoy looking at the less crowded streets lined with Christmas lights as you make your way to the city center. 

• Free parking at O Castro park: Okay, I’m gonna get a lot of backlash for letting y’all in on this secret, but many locals will park their cars at O Castro for the day. It’s free and not too far from the city center, but if anyone asks who told you about this, you didn’t hear it from me…..
